Colina gives the gift of “family” this Christmas
NASSAU, January 4, 2010 – Renaldo Gibson, a 17-year-old Freeport resident, had been hospitalized at the Princess Margaret Hospital since a tragic car collision in March left him completely paralyzed. The ventilator, which the insurance company donated just in time for Christmas, allowed him to spend two days at home with his family in Freeport.
Kathy Andrews, Senior Benefits Administrator at Colina’s office in Freeport was the first to hear about Renaldo’s story. She says, “It is always very sad to hear of these situations – especially when it’s someone so young. When I learned that the Gibson family needed a ventilator I contacted the head of the health division to let him know of the need. I am proud to work for a company that can be empathetic and responsive to those in need in our community.”
Glen Ritchie, Vice President of Group and Health Benefits, says it was a humbling experience for the staff of Colina. “We understand already the varying battles families are faced with when loved ones are hospitalized, especially during the holidays. Ruis Gibson, Renaldo’s father, is a client of ours, and it was a delight to know that we were able to bring a son home to his family for Christmas.”
Renaldo was initially completely paralyzed but after several minor surgical procedures, his left hand, foot, and arm are now responsive. Mr. Gibson says he is thankful his son was able to come home for Christmas. “He still needs care 24 hours a day so medical expenses are always a headache. However, my family and I thank Colina for generously donating the ventilator for Renaldo and giving us our merriest Christmas yet.”
Renaldo continues to recover at the Princess Margaret Hospital.
