In November of 1957, the government granted exclusive licences to large tour companies to transport tourists to and from the new airport at Windsor Field. Subsequent efforts to negotiate by a coalition of the PLP, BFL (Bahamas Federation of Labour) and the Bahamas Taxicab Union failed, leading to the call for a General Strike in January 1958. The strike lasted for almost two weeks, bringing the tourism industry to a standstill and forcing the government and Colonial Office to negotiate and implement more equitable labour laws for the colony.
