Colina Donates $10K Red Cross and Educates Staff on Hurricane Preparedness

Nassau, The Bahamas, June 3, 2024 – Colina made a $10,000 donation to The Bahamas Red Cross to assist with preparations for the Atlantic hurricane season which started June 1 and ends November 30. The Company has been a consistent supporter of The Bahamas Red Cross for many years.

“Colina is a Bahamian company, and we are committed to our communities,” said Maxine V. Seymour, Director, Corporate Communications, Colina. “The Bahamas Red Cross and Colina are in the business of risk management.”

According to Seymour, she would like everyone to have insurance coverage, not so they can get sick or die, but in the event they do, so that they are covered.

The donation was presented at a ‘Lunch and Learn’ event held to educate Colina team members on hurricane preparedness. Alicia Pinder, Director General of The Bahamas Red Cross, addressed staff.

“According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOOA), we’re expecting seventeen to twenty-five storms, total named storms, this year and eight to thirteen of them will become hurricanes, and between four to seven of them major hurricanes,” said Alicia Pinder, Director General of The Bahamas Red Cross. “Due to our archipelagic nature, and the fact we are a small island nation located directly in the hurricane belt, we have an increased probability of hydro-meteorological disasters.”

Pinder also offered key hurricane preparedness tips including explaining the importance of establishing an evacuation route in the event of flooding or downed trees or power lines. She stressed the importance of developing a family emergency kit with critical items.

“Include in your emergency kit as well, battery-operated radios, flashlights, fans and USB, charges,” said Pinder. “House important documents in a water-tight sealed Ziploc bag or a container that will prevent against damage – this includes your passport and possibly even your driver’s license.”

“Colina would like to commend The Bahamas Red Cross for their commitment to educating and assisting Bahamians in need across The Commonwealth,” said Maxine V. Seymour, Director, Corporate Communications, Colina.

Edison Sumner, President of The Bahamas Red Cross was also in attendance and expressed his gratitude to Colina for the donation.

“It will enable us to provide critical care, emergency services and hope for those who are in need of it the most,” said Sumner. “The impact of your generosity will ripple across the islands of The Bahamas touching lives and strengthening the fabric of our communities in ways that will be felt for years to come.”

The presentation took place at Colina’s J. Whitney Building on 21 Collins Avenue.
