Colina executives highlight role of technology in insurer’s success
Nassau, The Bahamas, August 24, 2026 – Colina Insurance Limited’s utilization of technology has played a significant role in its success.
By investing in digital solutions, the company has improved customer service, streamlined internal processes, and increased overall efficiency. Online platforms and mobile services allow customers to access policies, make payments, submit claims, and receive support more conveniently, enhancing the customer experience.
According to Marcus Bosland, chief operating officer at Colina Insurance Limited, technology has strengthened Colina’s ability to manage data securely, assess risks more accurately, and make informed business decisions.
“About two years ago we launched an electronic application service for our agents to sell individual life polices, and they took to it wonderfully. It really made things easier, because now an agent can be in Nassau and sell to clients in Long Island, and execute that process seamlessly. We have since extended that to our brokers. Our employees, agents and brokers are very forward focused. They want to use technology to deliver convenience and service in a way that best serves the customer.”
Bosland added that earlier this year, the company extended the application service to include individual medical policies.
“These can now be sold electronically. This year we also launched an electronic know your customer (KYC) system that allows our clients to provide their identification electronically in a way that is safe and secure. On the sales side that has been well received.”
DeAndrea Lewis, vice president, life operations & sales at Colina, revealed that Colina was the first insurance company in The Bahamas that made it possible for its customers to go online and see the current status of their policy values. She further noted that this innovation seamlessly integrates with Colina’s payment portal, reducing the uncertainty clients face with respect to the timing and the amount that should be paid.
“Our clients have real-time access to what’s is happening with their policies. To that extent, we are ahead of the curve.”
Lewis pointed out that when it comes to technology, every year something changes in the insurance sector, therefore there are continuous improvements to Colina’s systems. In addition, the company embraces and incorporates feedback from its clients.
“It’s important that we stay relevant to our customers,” she stressed.
Sapna Chatlani, vice president, group and health benefits at Colina, highlighted and lauded the level of system integration Colina has been able to achieve.
“In order for us to adapt to a high-demand environment and the customer of today, who requires a higher level of service and efficiency, we have to embrace technology, and Colina is constantly doing that.”
The insurer’s state-of-the-art Southwest Plaza branch, which was officially opened on May 28, represents a fundamental shift in how it believes service should be delivered.
“That branch represents a different way of interacting with our customers,” said Bosland, who called it a more open, Apple store-type of environment, which allows for greater interaction between clients and customer service representatives.
“Even though our services can be facilitated online, at home, we added kiosks at the branch so that our team can provide our customers a more guided experience for those who are less comfortable with the technology,” said Bosland. “They can get a bit of help, which would give them more confidence in using the technology. Having that knowledge then gives customers more options in terms of going to a Colina office, or utilizing our services at home.
“So far, our customers are really enjoying the experience at our Southwest Plaza branch. We are learning as much as we possibly can from that location, figuring out how to deliver a similar experience and services at our other locations.”
Looking to the future, Bosland said Colina has been utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in its operation, but it is taking baby steps.
“Many of us at Colina use AI every day. It is a really exciting technology. It has the potential to revolutionalize how services are delivered in frankly every industry. We are working very hard to figure out how best to implement it in a way that still maintains a human connection.”
Bosland stressed that every decision made at Colina will have a human element to it, adding that AI has its place in terms of claims triage, pre-reading documents, or figuring out where an incoming query needs to be directed.
“There are a number of things it can do, and we are confident that it will transform our organization.”
According to Lewis, Colina is currently exploring how it can utilize AI to increase efficiency.
“There are two particularly data-driven areas in the company that have already leveraged AI significantly to analyze data, and they have seen improvements in computation time and getting things done. Reporting deadlines have improved,” she said.
Lewis further noted that Colina’s continued investment in technology solutions will ensure it remains competitive and continues to deliver a modern and responsive insurance experience.
